A necromancer is a practitioner of magic who specializes in communicating with and controlling the spirits of the dead. They are often depicted as using their powers to raise the dead or to gain knowledge from the deceased. In many fantasy and folklore traditions, necromancers are seen as dark and sinister figures, using their abilities for malevolent purposes. The term "necromancer" comes from the Greek words "nekros" (dead) and "manteia" (divination), reflecting their association with communicating with the deceased. **

In J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," the Necromancer is a mysterious and powerful dark sorcerer who resides in Dol Guldur, a fortress in Mirkwood. It is later revealed that the Necromancer is actually Sauron, the primary antagonist in Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. Sauron uses the guise of the Necromancer to gather his strength and plot his return to power. The presence of the Necromancer plays a significant role in the events of "The Hobbit," as it sets the stage for the larger conflict that unfolds in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. **
